Our backyard makeover is
coming along quite nicely -
but it hasn't been easy.
Join me -
As I share the story of
tearing out the concrete slab...
| We borrowed a friend's sledgehammer. ("This won't take long") |
The sledgehammer didn't work as we thought it would.
I guess the concrete pad was thicker than we originally thought. |
| Oliver found the softest place outside - we were using the blanket to shield the glass door. |
| So, we tried an electric sledgehammer... |
| I collected the rocks/debris and carried them to the garbage can in the front yard. |
| Hours later - still not getting the result we were hoping for... |
| "Mom! What are you doing to my backyard?!" |
| This is the flagstone that will eventually go down where the concrete was... |
It wouldn't be a good blog post
without a few cute pictures of our puppy.
He helped us quite a bit...
| We shaved his back shorter for the hot summer - he has the cutest little tan spots. |
| Okay - Day 3: Rent a large jackhammer. |
| MUCH better! |
| And it's done! No more concrete patio! |
So, we got to carry the rocks (heavy rocks) one by one to the front yard for disposal.
We don't have a wheelbarrow. |
| We got the big rocks out |
| Then, Eric started leveling the ground out. |
| Me and Oliver dug a ditch for the step. |
| He was a tired boy - a lot of activity. |
| Almost level... |
Machine 1: to compact the dirt = unsuccessful.
The machine wouldn't work right. |
| Machine 2: to compact the dirt = success! |
| Putting in the step |
And that's all we have done for now -
we expect to have the whole thing finished by July 5th.
We are going to get the dirt tonight for setting
the flagstone.
It has been an adventure -
but I think the hard part is over
and the fun part is beginning!
